Chapter 2: Gallery Sales
Photography can be sold in a variety of ways today. Before the internet, you had to go around following fairs and festivals, or carrying a portfolio into any gallery that seemed to sell in your media. Today, you have a lot of potential avenues to pursue in order to sell your photography. Overviewing the major methods for selling photography, will help you determine what you feel confident in doing for your business as a starter method. It is best to choose one way of selling your artistic talents when you first begin and then as you grow your business, you can start to work on other methods of selling your work.
Galleries are not a lost cause for you to sell your work. However, galleries may not be your first choice anymore. Galleries are looking for the best of the best talents. They also want to have artistic work they know they can market for a good commission. In this respect, most galleries are going to look to see if you have a portfolio and a name that is already sold or can be sold easily.
Benefits
Selling to galleries has the biggest benefit in terms of income, when it is the right gallery. Photography galleries are able to market to a higher class of clientele; therefore, they can sell your works for a higher cost than if you sell prints on your website or to large retailers.
Galleries also do the marketing work for you. All you have to do is focus on what you want to do, which is taking photographs.
Disadvantages
Galleries are strict on who and what they will put in their galleries.
They do require commissions.
Competitive ways to sell photography have in some ways harmed galleries and their ability to sell your work. They have to work harder to market to high class individuals and may not see frequent return visits from clientele. This is not always the case, but it is one factor to consider as you think about where you want to sell to and whether they have the client base to support your work.
For galleries, it can be best to search around various tourist towns to sell your work. Tourist galleries get plenty of visitors versus major galleries in big cities that may be more difficult to get your work featured.
Other Options
You also have the option of starting your own gallery as a way to feature your work. The downside to owning a gallery is that the business falls completely on your shoulders. You either have to be a marketer for yourself or you need to hire professionals that can run the gallery. It also takes quite a bit of starter income, a good location, and a savvy business mind to put the business plan together. If you know that you are unable to run the business because you would rather take photos, then it may be an option for you. You may also have to work towards being able to afford establishing your own gallery.
